Body Transformation Project: Bad TV, Great Living
Reality TV has created a vision of fitness and how to get there. Shows like The Biggest Loser and I Used to be Fat teach some very specific lessons about the practice of body transformation. The problem is that almost all of them are wrong.
While the veracity of reality TV doesn’t exactly keep us up at night, we are very concerned with seeing fitter, happier people. And we want to see them stay fit and happy in the long-term. That’s why we’re stepping in. It’s an intervention, people.
Over the next two weeks, we’re going to detail how doing exactly the opposite of everything above can yield truly impressive results in the real world. And we’re going to tell you about our own BODY TRANSFORMATION PROGRAM (details at the bottom).
“But wait! Those people do wind up getting into shape, don’t they?” Indeed, some of them do. To understand how (and what proportion), let’s step into a producer’s shoes:
- Hold a massive casting call for overweight, highly motivated people.
- Strip out the bottom 90% of applicants, based on health factors, likelihood of success and, of course, whether they’re camera-friendly.
- Take the 10% fittest, most motivated applicants – the best of the best – and run them through a grueling fitness test to even qualify. Never mind that this is like having a reading contest to select from applicants to a literacy program.
- Take your elite group and isolate them from the world.
- Control their food intake rigidly (until it’s time for product placement from Subway). Focus on caloric restriction, low-fat and sheer willpower. When in doubt, don’t eat anything!
- Start the program off with a soul-crushing round of exercise. Push everyone to the limit on the first day. Scream early and often.

- Progressively increase the volume of exercise to incredible proportions. Focus on running and endurance-based exercise. The more the better.
- Joint pain? Suck it up.
- Make scale weight the sole criterion for success and advancement.
10. Periodically throw contestants right back into the fire of the real world with no real nutritional skills. Make it clear that it’s only a question of caloric restriction and willpower.
Does that sound about right?
It doesn’t to us. Any motivated person should be able to succeed. As a matter of fact, any motivated person should be able to succeed and live right here in the real world.
That’s why we’ve formulated our own body transformation program. It may not be good TV but it’s sure as hell good training.
