Bred to Run
The New York Times just released a great article on barefoot running from Born to Run author, Christopher McDougall.
Here’s the link. And below are a few take-away points:
* It can be argued that marketing shoes as a “safety device” in regards to running-related injuries has actually led to more injuries over time.
-
* The belief in the need for cushioning and pronation control is, in retrospect, “completely wrong thinking,” according to Benno Nigg the researcher whose work actually spurred on many of the changes to running shoe construction.
-
* Even a pair of Vibrams (or any other minimalist running shoe) will not automatically transform you into a cool-running Tarahumara. Technique still reigns supreme.
-
* “The key to injury-free running is balance, elasticity, stability in midstance and cadence.
