Fear and Loathing in Fit Places
There’s a common thread we see among the uninitiated. More specifically, there’s a common fear. It seems that people who haven’t worked out much before are afraid that, when they come in, people are going to laugh at their lesser level of fitness. It’s a Charles Atlas-style scenario. Instead of kicking sand in their faces, though, the fitter people are going to snicker while they effortlessly perform thousand lb. squat thrusts.
“Ha! Ha! Ha!” they’ll say, “You are struggling with little weight while I easily manipulate these huge weights. You are insignificant!”
Wow, those imaginary guys are mean!
Here’s what I want to tell each and every potential newbie. What you do will be very hard . . . for you. What those other guys do will be very hard . . . for them. More to the point, nothing will ever be easy for anyone. Whatever your level of fitness, our job is to figure out what’s sufficiently challenging. And as soon as that starts to become easy, to change things up.
If you want an easy workout, that’s no problem. We’ll give you a pair of 3 lb. dumbbells and tell you to perform some movements at a leisurely pace. If you want to make real progress, however, we’ll give you some things that will challenge you in the right way.
As for those other, fitter people . . . well, they’ll be too busy working hard to notice what you’re doing anyway. And if they’re not, we’ll just have hand them some bigger weights.
Now that we’ve got that all that out of the way, suffice it to say that if you’re ready to work, we’re ready to work with you.
