Self-Talk During Training

I’m going to give you a sample internal dialogue during a difficult set. Then I’m going to humbly ask that you share the self-talk that you personally use to get the job done in the comments section below.

I’ve conveniently divided the sample self-talk into two voices: The Fear and The Awesome.

angel devil Self Talk During Training

12 reps to go.

The Fear: You can’t do fifteen reps with this weight. This is madness.

The Awesome: I might get hurt?

TF: No, it’s just too hard.

TA:  Did I pick an appropriate amount of weight?

11 reps to go

TF: Yes, in theory.

TA: Systems check! Anything hurt? Anything not working like it should?

10 reps to go

TF: You could die at any minute . . . but no. No problems I can think of.

TA:  Then don’t waste my time before I’ve hit 10 reps.

8 reps to go

TF: You know . . .

TA: Shut it.

6 reps to go

TF: I don’t . . .

TA:  Silencio!

5 reps to go

TF: Okay, I waited! You’re doing fine but I don’t think you can hit 15.

TA: Meet me at rep #12. We’ll discuss.

3 reps to go

TF: Maybe you can do one more. But that’s it.

TA: We’ll chat about that in just one moment.

2 reps to go

TF: I just want you to know that this is very, very difficult.

TA: That’s true. But I think I can do at least one more, don’t you.

TF: Well, one more, anyway.

1 rep to go

TA: And one more.

TF: —-

One Response to “Self-Talk During Training”

  1. Fernando Katayama:

I can’t think much (as you can see) but when I’m training, it just gets even worst.
My broken English vocabulary gets reduced to a few words. That’s make impossible any kind of dialogue.
When I’m a training usually I use this words:
    - Yeah Buddy!
    - Light weight! Light weight!
    - [breath] DO IT! DO IT!
    - aarrggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhgggggghhhaarrhhhhhhgggggg
    - motherf*****rsonofB*****Fu***you!!!!!
    - HA! YEAH! Fu**! Fu**! YOU’RE MINE!
    - Fu**… that was heavy….

Usually it is in this sequence… however it may vary with the moment or the lack of oxygen in my brain!

    are you impressed uh?!
